Every year, CNN highlights the work of 10 people who are doing great things to helps others. Then, people all over the world vote for the one they think deserves to win. Win what? $250,000.
Go to CNN.com/heroes and watch the profile videos for at least 5 of the 10 nominees. Choose the one you think deserves to win and make a small poster (8.5''/11'') that convinces people to vote for your candidate.
Your poster should be colorful and must include the person's name, an idea of what he/she is doing to help others, and POWERFUL LANGUAGE that would convince someone to vote for your candidate.

Do some research on Steve Jobs. Find out some things he invented, what values he promoted, and what he made possible for the first time.
Take one of the templates available in the classroom and write Steve Jobs a short thank you note THAT IS SPECIFIC TO YOUR LIFE. See my examples (which are about people other than Jobs) to get a sense of what I mean. The grading check list is also available here.

Look over the list of banned books on the Banned Book Week! page. Find one that you've read. If there aren't any that you've read, write about the American Herritage Dictionary. Make a two column T-chart with 7 lines at the bottom set aside for summary (you can use my template if you want). Make a list of at least five ways the book could be bad for students and five ways the book could be good for students. In the bottom section, come to a decision about whether or not school districts should ban this book from their schools.
Bring your chart to school Monday (10/3) and be prepared to tell the class a little about your final decision.
Look at the highlighted questions on in the "Steinbeck Questions" section of The Pearl page. Do a little research and find answers to any THREE of the highlighted questions. Write up your answers in complete sentences (hand written or typed is fine). Each answer should be at least two to three sentences.
Interview someone who is currently at least 20-years-old about his/her experience on Sept 11, 2001. You must ask them 10 questions about their experience that day and hand in a transcript. See the sample interview for more instruction.
